Double Elimination

Two lives for every team

Sunset Shores is a club doubles open run on double elimination: drop a match in the winners bracket and you fall to the losers bracket instead of going home. The sample event shows the full anatomy โ€” the winners path to the grand final, the losers bracket grinding through elimination rounds, and the bracket reset match when the losers-bracket survivor takes the first final.

It is the format clubs pick when entry fees are real and a first-round draw feels unfair: every team is guaranteed at least two matches, and the final can require beating the undefeated team twice.

How double elimination works

Double elimination gives every team a second life. Teams start in the winners bracket; a loss there drops you into the losers bracket rather than out of the event. The losers bracket keeps eliminating until one survivor earns a seat in the grand final against the winners-bracket champion โ€” and if the survivor wins that match, a bracket reset is played because both finalists now have one loss.

A 16-team double elimination runs about 30 matches, roughly twice a single elimination โ€” the price of the guarantee that nobody goes home after one bad draw. The template shows both brackets in full, including the reset match at the end.

  • Every team is guaranteed at least two matches.
  • The grand final can require beating the undefeated team twice (bracket reset).
  • Plan roughly twice the venue hours of a single elimination of the same size.

FAQ

How long does a 16-team double elimination take?

About 30 matches. On two pickleball courts at 15 minutes a match that is roughly five hours of play; the template shows a completed run so you can judge the pacing yourself.

What is a bracket reset?

If the losers-bracket survivor beats the winners-bracket champion in the grand final, both teams now have one loss โ€” so a second, decisive final is played. The template event includes one, visible as the GF-2 match.

Double elimination or group stage + knockout?

Double elimination when the field is up to ~16 and you want continuous second chances; group stage + knockout when the field is bigger and a group phase fits the venue better. The format finder compares both for your exact numbers.
