Every round, everyone plays

TechLeague Open is an esports community tournament run on the Swiss system: no eliminations, five rounds, and every team plays in every single one. After each round, teams with similar records are paired against each other, so the leaderboard sharpens naturally until round five decides the podium.

This is the format esports organizers reach for when online sign-ups make attendance unpredictable โ€” whatever number of teams shows up on the day, the rounds simply work. The sample shows all five rounds and the final standings with tiebreakers applied.

How the Swiss system works

In a Swiss tournament nobody is eliminated: every round, every participant plays, and after each round teams with similar records are paired against each other. The number of rounds is chosen independently of the field size โ€” the recommendation is ceil(log2 N), so 24 teams typically play 5 rounds.

Standings are ranked by points with Buchholz (the combined score of your opponents) as the classic tiebreaker, because in a Swiss you do not play everyone and schedule luck must not decide the podium. The template shows all five rounds plus the final table.

  • Every team plays every round โ€” attendance stays high all day.
  • No seeding data needed; the first round can be a random or rating draw.
  • No-shows and late entries hurt far less than in bracket formats.

FAQ

How many Swiss rounds should I run?

The standard recommendation is ceil(log2 N): 3 rounds for 8 teams, 4 for 16, 5 for 24โ€“32. You need about log2(N) rounds to produce a clear undefeated leader, plus one if you want head-to-heads settled.

What is Buchholz?

The sum of points earned by all opponents you faced. Two teams with the same score are separated by how hard their schedules were โ€” it corrects for the luck of the pairing sequence.

Why choose Swiss over a knockout?

When attendance is uncertain, when you have no seeding data, or when the point of the day is that everyone plays. Knockouts are for when a single dramatic champion matters more than participation.
