Swiss fairness with a final everyone remembers
Northgate Cup combines the two things esports events need most: the flexibility of Swiss pairing and the drama of a knockout stage. Four Swiss rounds guarantee every team four matches and produce a clean ranking; the top eight then advance to a bracket that ends in one final match under the lights.
The sample event shows the full run — all Swiss rounds, the qualification cut, and the knockout bracket through to the champion. Use this structure when you want the no-show tolerance of Swiss plus a grand final for your stream or ceremony.

Swiss + knockout (the format of modern esports majors) runs a Swiss phase first: every team plays every round and the standings sharpen each round. When the Swiss phase ends, the top finishers — usually the top 8 — cut into a single elimination bracket that produces the champion on stage.
You get the no-show tolerance and fairness of Swiss with the ceremony of a final. The template event shows the full run: four Swiss rounds, the qualification cut, and the knockout bracket through to the trophy.
- Guaranteed Swiss games for everyone, plus a final for the top cut.
- The cut size (8, 16…) is configurable — pick what fits your stage time.
- Broadcast-friendly: the last matches are a clean, story-driven bracket.

FAQ
How many matches does a 16-team Swiss + knockout have?
With 4 Swiss rounds and a top-8 cut: 32 Swiss matches plus 7 knockout matches, 39 total. The finder estimates the hours from your match length and setup count.
How many teams should advance from Swiss?
The largest power of two that fits your schedule, capped at 8 for one-day events. Advancing half the field keeps the Swiss meaningful; advancing 2 of 24 makes early rounds feel pointless.
Can the knockout be double elimination?
Yes — the knockout stage supports single or double elimination. Single is the norm for esports; double suits community finals where a second chance on stage is part of the fun.
